A photographic and educational exhibition organised by the Courtyard of the Gentiles and the Women's Council of the Pontifical Council for Culture, to bear witness to and prevent violence against women.

The SEGNI exhibition is a pedagogical, photographic and communication project on the theme of violence against women, to raise awareness among young students and provide them with some cultural and cognitive tools to contribute to the prevention of the phenomenon. SEGNI in fact testifies - through images of personal research and testimonies - to the stories, looks, gestures and spaces of women who have lived and suffered experiences of domestic violence.

The exhibition is divided into 33 photographic pictures, comprising 42 shots: the authors are the artist-photographers Simona Ghizzoni and Ilaria Magliocchetti Lombi, who - with an intimate and professional gaze - have transformed the testimonies of some women victims of domestic violence into paths of images and text that recount moments of everyday life comprehensible to all.

Through the mediation of self-portraits, Simona Ghizzoni relived the stories she had heard, retracing her experiences; Ilaria Magliocchetti Lombi, on the other hand, focused on the places, objects and familiar spaces where violence broke out.

The common feature of each shot is the focus of the lens on apparently negligible details, which instead turned out to be signs to be grasped as clues for the early detection of violent behaviour or dynamics. Photography, a contemporary language we all use and which encourages us to stop and observe our surroundings carefully, helps us in this process of awareness.

The SEGNI project has already been hosted by the I.C.S. Margherita di Navarra in Monreale and the Liceo Scientifico Statale Galileo Galilei in Palermo. Educational workshops on the subject have been held in both schools, providing students with a profound and unprecedented insight into the whole initiative and the phenomenon. In the coming months, the project will also involve other schools throughout the country, again with the aim of guiding young people and helping them to find concrete cultural and educational tools to combat the phenomenon of violence against women, making them protagonists and agents of change.
