French landscape painters of the eighteenth and nineteenth century

 A selection of 70 works, including watercolours and engravings by French painters and engravers working in the Eternal City in the second half of the XVIII century and the first decades of the XIX century, preserved in the graphic arts collection of the Museum of Rome. 

PLEASE NOTE: the exhibition has been extended until June 17, 2012.

Usually they were produced for foreign travellers who wanted to take back with them a souvenir of the city.

On display works by Hubert Robert and Charles Joseph Natoire, sheets by Victor-Jean Nicolle, Abraham-Louis Rodolphe Ducros and Jean-Louis Desprez, all images are inspired by a poignant picturesque aesthetics which, besides showing popular views and corners of the city, tell the story of ancient ruins covered in vegetation or offer visions of the Roman countryside.
