A series of watercolours depicting nineteenth century Rome

Museo di Roma

A selection of 70 watercolours which document various aspects of the city that have disappeared or changed radically in the course of time. An exhibition, in homage to Achille Pinelli, one of the most prominent figures of the artistic world of nineteenth century Rome and the son of the more famous Bartolomeo, is an occasion to celebrate the vast heritage conserved in the collections of the Museum of Rome.

“Achille Pinelli’s Rome” - an exhibition supported by the Office of Cultural Politics and the Municipality of Rome, - presents to the public from the 28th June to the 16th September in the rooms of the Museum of Rome Palazzo Braschi a selection of 70 watercolours created between 1832 and 1835 by Achille Pinelli, the son of the celebrated Bartolomeo.
Achille Pinelli (Rome 1809 - Naples 1841) created, in the first half of the 1830s, a series of approximately 200 watercolours, all conserved in the collection of the Museum of Rome. The examples on display in the exhibition “Achille Pinelli’s Rome” are the result of a rigorous selection process from the entire collection
In an era in which it was not possible to take advantage of photography as a means of reproducing images, Achille Pinelli’s watercolours had a great value, and today they are not only precious works of art, but provide a genuine catalogue of many buildings which no longer exist. Although, perhaps unknowingly, he includes some imprecision and imagination, Pinelli carried out a valuable piece of work, documenting aspects of the city which today have disappeared or, over the course of time, have changed radically.
The choice has been made privileging watercolours which depict places in the city which have disappeared or changed radically; one of the most important examples is that of the church of San Gerolamo degli Schiavoni in the extraordinary area around the Ripetta Port. The port was sacrificed in the works done to create the Tiber embankment.
The artist’s works almost always show lively scenes of daily life, which evoke the style of his father, Bartolomeo Pinelli. Such is the case in the panel dedicated to Santa Maria della Scala, which in the foreground shows the festival of Abruzzi mountain dwellers, culminating in a “bear dance”. Or indeed in the procession of confratelli in front of the church of the Natività di Gesù in Piazza Pasquino, who wear the characteristic habits and are preceded by “mannataro” in livery.
For the “Achille Pinelli’s Rome” exhibition, there will be exhibited, in homage to Bartolomeo’s style, scenes illustrating the picturesque Roman life of that period, derived from the celebrated engravings of the elder Pinelli’s The cobbler’s shop or The cart of the October festival.
